A Salutation to Sweetness
When Sweetness arrives upon my doorstep, I welcome her inside at once. When she offers me a taste, I bow at her feet and unhinge my jaw.
•
Perhaps I should resist - for I am all too familiar with the dangers of improper dosing - the never enoughness, the way too muchness, the tragedy of not honoring the just rightness.
Her irresistible nature inspires Longing, igniting the ravenous beast of Desire who swoons in her presence.
•
But, we humans must risk delight. In the potent words of Jack Gilbert, “we must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world,” and so I choose to imbibe.
•
The remedy seems to lie in the acknowledgement of her ubiquitous presence; in the savoring of her, morsel by delicious morsel, in all of her glorious incarnations; in trusting that she will come again tomorrow; and knowing that she tastes better after a dose or two of her comrades: Bitterness, Saltiness, Spiciness, Blandness, and Pungency.
When I remember too, the eternal Sweetness that lies within, I need not deny the guest of Sweetness entry out of fear of engulfment or the Madness of Craving that may sweep through upon her departure.
This life is brimming with Sweetness. I need only orient my senses in her direction. And receive.
•
Sweetness dripping from the ripe flesh of nature’s deflowered ovaries.
Sweetness pulsing through my fingertips as they stroke the silky fur of a sleeping kitten.
Sweetness in the tingling of my skin and the heaviness of my hair as I sway within the ocean’s cradle.
Sweetness in the lips of my lover.
Sweetness welling up behind eyes that feast upon the beauty of existence.
Sweetness rushing through my blood in the ecstasy of dance.
Sweetness cloaked in Creativity awakening the passion that slumbers in my heart.
Sweetness pouring from the very soul of Love itself.
SWEETNESS.
